Thanks Dad!

Thanks Dad!

Leland Harold Timm was a hero to only a select few. Leland, "Lee" was my dad. Leland H. Timm was born June 4 1922, died Aug. 6, 1999, and is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and he received his military discharge in 1946. In March 1946, he married my mom, Sofia Stern in Springfield, Minn. He worked as a police officer in Fairmont, Minn., and then for the post office in Fairmont. In 1960 he moved to Fargo and joined Prudential Life Insurance and remained a life insurance man for the remainder of his life.

Dad doesn't sound like the hero type but to me he was/is a hero. Having been born just prior to the Great Depression and living in it till the age of 17 my dad's goal was to see that his family was never in need financially.

Dad was a patriot. He was 17 when World War II broke out and like many young men at the time Lee Timm was eager to serve. Like a story from a comic book my Dad was a scrawny little kid who was rejected at the recruiting office for being underweight. He went to the malt shop and drank as many malts as he could without vomiting and went back until he was accepted by the US Coast Guard. It always amazes me how many MN/ND boys who have never seen an ocean and/or don't know how to swim joined services that required them to be on boats.

After the war Dad served others as a Police Officer, a Postman, and then as I knew him, as a Life Insurance man (I was 5 years old when Dad became an insurance man).

Lee (Leland) Timm was my hero because he married my mother, raised us in a Christian home, and taught us Christian values. I'm thanking him today because of all of the above but especially today for serving our country in The War of All Wars.

All those who have served and THOSE WHO SERVE TODAY are HEROS!!! I am so glad to me living in a military community, the Minot Air Force Base, where I can see the wonderful men and women of today who put you and me before their own personal safety to serve their country. I wish my hero, Leland Timm could see his granddaughter in her Jr. ROTC uniform, he would be as proud as I am and surly my daughter would be his hero, as she is also mine today.
