Happy Mothers Day

Okay, it's not Mothers Day but Barbara Todaro 's post A Grateful Thought | My Mother Is 97 today brought back a fond memory of my mother on mothers day back in 1973.

MomA little background is in order here and I hope you enjoy this true story.

Back in 1973 I was attending Detroit Lakes Vocational Technical Institute (I have no idea what it's called these days).

I was enrolled in small engine mechanics because I knew little to nothing about engines and the plan was that my dad was going to set me up as the owner of a motorcycle  shop. It was going to be a Suzuki dealership called Psycho Cycle's.

Even though my dad was pretty well off he was also a bit of penny pincher. He put me up at The Mermaid Motel, a bit of a dive that probably cost him about $50. a month as it was during the off season in a MN resort area.Wisdom

He also gave me $20.00 a week to live on. I don't know if you see the problem here but remember we are talking about 1973. After purchasing a three finger dime bag a week it didn't leave much for groceries much less money for gift giving or anything else.

Something had to give. Of course I gave up groceries.

After a couple of weeks of dining on saltines with cake frosting my roommate (I don't remember why he was broke as well) from Northern MN decided he needed to take out the very well feed squirrel the neighbors had been feeding all winter.

We ate squirrel for two days. It was a big fat squirrel and it was delicious to two starving 18 year old boys.

I don't remember what other sacrifices were made, maybe an album sale or two but enough sacrifice was made to scrounge up $70. dollars to purchase this 16" rosewood sculpture of the man of knowledge and boy of learning for my mother on mothers day.

My mom cherished it until her passing and my stepfather knew how much it meant to her and I so he returned it to me upon moms passing.

Hello Bob and what a great story and glad that you have it now.  I hope you did not get much snow out of the storm, we had to stay a extra day in the mountains because of the snow and wind.

It went South of Minot Will Hamm but many parts of ND did get a foot or more of snow. I think we received about 2".

Thank you Krystin Mitchell, CPA CFE . She never knew the story of sacrifice behind it but she was very thrilled to receive the gift.

Awww, sounds like so many other young men your age back in the 70's, Bob - broke after purchasing the 'fun stuff!' At least you didn't live in your Mom's basement like many did! LOL

Seriously, what a sweet gesture and I know how much your Mom coveted that gift from her adoring son. And, I love that you wound up getting it back when she passed.

Debe Maxwell, CRS it was really cool that my stepfather returned it to me. He and I had a great relationship where none of my siblings could stand him.
